Community Focus – United Japanese Society Welcomes “Year of the Rat!”

The MIS Veterans Education Society of Hawaii held its annual shinnen enkai luncheon on Jan. 26 at Natsunoya Tea House. Highlights included a keynote speech by Nisei Veterans Legacy president Lynn Heirakuji (front) and the installation of the 2020 officers. The officers installed were (left to right) Keith Matsumoto, director; Karen Kikukawa, secretary; Sherman Takao, treasurer; Larry Enomoto, past president and director; Shinye Gima, president; Glen Arakaki, director; and Herbert Matsumoto, director.

Community Focus – MIS Veterans of Hawaii Installs its 2020 Officers

Members of the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association ushered in 2020 — the Year of the Rat — with a Hatsudate Shiki, or first tea of the year on Jan. 19 at the Seikoan Tea House at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i. Miharu Oba (brown kimono) was the officiating teishu (tea ceremony host) with her assistant and narrator, or hanto, Miharu Ooba (pink kimono).
