AUTUMN THANKSGIVING FESTIVAL

On Sunday, Oct. 8, Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii held its 117th annual autumn Thanksgiving festival. According to the program distributed at the event, “Autumn harvest season is a significant time to express our appreciation and gratitude for Kami’s guidance and blessings.” Each year, in Izumo Taishakyo Hawaii celebrates with government and business leaders as well as community and cultural organizations.

Due to construction outside the shrine, the usual entertainment did not occur this year, but there are plans to resume a full celebration next year. Here are some highlights from this year’s blessing and worship program.

WINDWARD MALL BON DANCE

On Saturday, Oct. 7, the Windward Mall Center Court in Käne‘ohe was filled with music and dance. The mall, in collaboration with Windward Buddhist Temple and Käne‘ohe Higashi Hongwanji, hosted a day full of festivities for the final bon dance of the year. There were food and craft vendors as well as activities for kids.
