
WHO/WHAT: The Hawai’i Public Radio recently featured a story that commemorates the 80th anniversary of the creation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The broadcast includes information about the 442nd RCT that was created in March, 1943 when thousands of Nisei from Hawai’i volunteered to serve, despite strong discrimination against people of Japanese ancestry living in the United States. It features interviews from Lynn Heirakuji of the Nisei Veterans Legacy; Royce Higa, a 102-year-old veteran of the 442nd RCT’s 522nd Field Artillery Battalion; and Sage Tottori, a senior at the Island Pacific Academy.
