WHO/WHAT: The Japanese American National Museum will host a celebration of life for Norman Y. Mineta, the chair of the board of trustees, who passed away at his home in Edgewater, Maryland on Tues., May 3. Secretary Mineta represented San Jose as mayor and served in the House of Representatives for over 20 years. He was the first Asian American appointed to a Presidential cabinet as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Secretary of Transportation for Presidents Clinton and Bush. He served on JANM’s board of governors from 1988 to 1995 and was the chair of the board from 2010 to 2015. Some of his many accolades include JANM’s Distinguished Medal of Honor, Grand Cordon, Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese government and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006, America’s highest civilian award. In honor of his memory, JANM will light the beacon in the Pavilion throughout June.
