Held at the Hawaii Convention Center back in 2019, the Okinawan Festival featured Hui Okinawa Kobudo Taiko from Hawai‘i Island, Radio Okinawa’s Miuta Taisho Winner – Champu Ryu Geino Dan from Okinawa, and Azama Akemi Ryubu Kenkyojo Hawaii Shibu and Nomura Ryu Dento Ongaku Kyokai Hawaii.
The Hawaii United Okinawa Association YouTube channel was initiated in January 2020 to help keep Hawai‘i’s Okinawan community connected through the COVID pandemic lockdown. But due to its success and ability to reach Okinawan communities beyond the shores of the 808 state, the HUOA YouTube programming is flourishing and here to stay! Here is the line up for May and June:
“Yuntaku Live! Episode 44, Oroku Azajin Club,” Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m.; Thursday, May 26 and Thursday, June 2 at 5 p.m.
Live-streamed on July 27, 2021; a talk story and music show featuring the Oroku Azajin Club, a club member of the HUOA. This episode is co-hosted by George Bartels and Clarisse Kobashigawa. Also appearing are fellow club members Dexter Teruya, Kenton Odo, Gene Kaneshiro, and Howard Takara to provide historical education and music for your enjoyment.
“Yuntaku Live! Kenton Odo Dokuenkai Solo Recital Promotion,” Tuesday, May 24.
Members of HUOA will promote the upcoming Kenton Odo Dokuenkai Solo Recital, which will be held in-person at the Pearl City Cultural Center on Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m. Go to huoa.org for updates on the specific time that the show will air.
“Yuntaku Live! Legacy Banquet Special,” Tuesday, June 14.
Members of HUOA will promote the upcoming Legacy Award Banquet, which will be held in-person at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Coral Ballroom on Sunday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The award banquet will be honoring Dr. Mark Mugiishi, Jane Serikaku and Paul Yonamine. Live-streamed on August 10, 2021; a talk story and music show featuring Hui O Laulima, a women’s club member of the HUOA. Club members discuss the various projects of the club, including community service and Okinawan cultural exchange and education.
