WHO/WHAT: The Hawaii United Okinawa Association presents its 71st Installation celebration, which honors the “Uchinanchu (Okinawan person) of the Year” from each of its 49 clubs, representing the best of over 40,000 HUOA members. The HUOA theme for 2021, selected by incoming Pres. Patrick Miyashiro, is “Chimugukuru Tiichi (All Hearts Unite as One).”
For this first virtual installation, community members are encouraged to attend the streaming event from home. They can purchase a “celebration package” (including one program booklet per family, a favor and bento), to offset the costs incurred by HUOA, then tune in online from home.
WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Jan. 16, from 2 p.m. (HST). Packages for $20 each (Bento A: Shoyu Pork, Mochiko Chicken, Fish & Vegetable Tempura, Chicken Nishime, Rice w/Furikake, Takuan; or Bento B: Tofu & Goya Champuru, Shoyu Pork, Okinawan Yakisoba, Rice w/Furikake, Okinawan Sweet Potato) should be purchased online ahead of time at andagi.wufoo.com/forms/z14uv5uw0nogjmm/; then they can be picked up at 10 a.m.-noon the day of the live ceremony, either at HOC (94-587 Ukee St., Waipio/Waipahu) or at Jikoen Hongwanji (1731 N. School St., Kalihi). Questions, contact Caro Higa (caro.h@huoa.org or 808 676-5400).
