WHO/WHAT: Helen Zia will talk about her new book, “Last Boat Out of Shanghai” which examines the mass exodus from China during the communist revolution and its impact on global politics today. The book chronicles the real stories of people who faced the chaos, frenzy and terror of revolution as they catapulted themselves into the unknown of Hong Kong and the U.S. And instead of finding a safe haven, many of these migrants found unwelcome attitudes and political hostilities that barred them, much as present-day refugees face hostility, barriers, and violence around the globe.
Zia’s talk is presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, the Honolulu American Citizens League and Harris United Methodist Church. The book can be purchased at the event. Zia will also sign books.
WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, June 23, 2-4 p.m., at Harris United Methodist Church (20 S. Vineyard St.).
