PBS Hawai‘i will screen “Rescuing the Lost Battalion — The Story Behind the ‘Heroes,’” an NHK documentary on the World War II rescue of the Texas “Lost Battalion” by AJA soldiers of the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team. In the closing days of October 1944, German forces had pinned down soldiers in 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, from Texas, in the dense forests of the Vosges Mountains in northeastern France. After numerous efforts to rescue the 141st had failed, the battle-fatigued 442nd was called out to rescue the men. The Nisei soldiers became instant heroes, but at a steep human cost. The men who served, including Hawai‘i veteran Takeo “Ike” Ikeda, share their stories in this documentary by NHK director Yoichiro Sasagawa.

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Aug. 4, 8 p.m. on PBS Hawai‘i. For more information, visit
