In a poor town in northern Japan in the eighteenth century, the residents suffered in great poverty due to heavy taxes imposed by the feudal lord. Juzaburo who worries about the future of his hometown and his eight fellow merchants come up with a secret plan of loaning a large sum of money to their lord, from whom they collect interest which they distribute to the town’s people to escape poverty. But if their plan is uncovered, they will definitely be decapitated . . . Do-or-die intellectual battle begins!

“893 (Yakuza) Gurentai (Yakuza Hooligans),” 1966 action film, 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Directed by Sadao Nakajima. Starring Hiroki Matsukata and Ichiro Araki.

A bunch of young, angry and penniless misfits are full of great vitality. They aren’t quite up to joining the yakuza and and execute a variety of petty scams. After being approached by a yakuza and asked to become a spy for them, they are now planning to take 10 million yen from the yakuza.

Ai wo Tsumu Hito (The Pearls of the Stone Man),” 2015 drama, 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Set in the beautiful hills in Hokkaido, this is a moving story of a widower whose world begins to expand with the guides his late wife left in her letters for him. Atsushi and Ryoko move to Hokkaido after retirement. Yet, Atsushi who’s worked all his life doesn’t know how to kill time. Concerned, Ryoko asks him to build her long-dreamt stone walls around their home. However, suddenly Ryoko collapses from a terminal heart disease. She yet hides this from Atsushi not to upset him. After her death, Atsushi finds letters from Ryoko. Following the instructions in the letters, he begins to interact with others.

Yae and Kiku, daughters of drapers in Edo, must travel to Kyoto in place of their sickly fathers to attend to some businesses affairs. On their way to Kyoto, the two ladies are ambushed by a group of bandits. However a good Samaritan named Santaro comes to their rescue. Santaro is aiding a young samurai named Sanshiro who is on an official mission to deliver a message to a noble in Kyoto. When Yae and Kiku discover that a gang of assassins are after Sanshiro, they decide to help Sanshiro to complete his mission.

Joji learns a dark secret from his dying father; he learns he has a twin brother and a sister. He travels to find his brother and finds he has been murdered in mysterious circumstances. While staying with his sister he overhears his Uncle’s plans to find a 130 carat diamond (named the Queen of Sheba) and soon learns he may be behind other sinister schemes.
