WHO/WHAT: The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i celebrates the “Year of the Dog” with the 25th annual New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival. The event marks the first public event of the Gannenmono 150th anniversary immigration commemoration, as well as the kick-off of the Cherry Blossom Festival.
This annual celebration will feature food, crafts, entertainment and cultural demonstrations. Food selections will range from traditional Japanese and Okinawa fare such as local-style Hiroshima okonomiyaki and local-style Okinawan andagi, to such Island favorites as KC Waffle Dog and shave ice. There will also be craft vendors, games for children, kimono dressing, mochi pounding and martial arts demonstrations. The Royal Hawaiian Band and Taiko Center of the Pacific are among the many performances scheduled.
WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Jan. 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at JCCH (2454 S. Beretania St.) and Mo‘ili‘ili Field across the street.
