“Smothered” By Scenery
A few years ago a Chinese play, “The White Snake Lady,” was staged in Honolulu. There was hardly any scenery but the lack of it was more than offset by the beautiful costumes and brilliant acting. Some plays are “smothered” by scenery. In life, one’s possessions and pleasures tend to smother his soul.
