“Let’s Experience Nagaoka!” premieres Thursday, Feb. 9, at 8:30 p.m.

Honolulu’s sister city Nagaoka is the second largest city in Niigata Prefecture. Nagaoka has a long history and rich nature. “Wafu Sohonke,” returns Thursday, Feb. 16, at 8:30 p.m.

“Wafu Sohonke,” which introduces traditional Japanese food, crafts, tools and techniques highlighting Japanese cultural trivia, is back! You will see what makes Japan and its culture so great, including amazing traditional Wafu entertainment. Fully subtitled in English.

“Chokosoku! Sankin Kotai (Samurai Hustle),” premieres Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:35 p.m.

During the reign of the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, the Yunagaya Domain in the Tohoku region is small but has a gold mine. Sankin-kotai is a custom that requires the daimyo to visit the shogun in Edo. Masaatsu Naito of Yunagaya Domain receives an order to perform Sankin-kotai within five days; however, the time needed to visit Edo is eight days. He also learns he received the order because a high-ranking government official wants the gold mine. Masaatsu begins an unexpected operation to complete Sankin-kotai in the required time. Fully subtitled in English.

Feb. 3: “Bakuchi Uchi Fujimi no Shobu (Gambler: Victory Without Death),” 1967 drama, 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Directed by Shigehiro Ozawa. Starring Koji Tsuruta and Tomisaburo Wakayama.

Tsunetaro is a talented gambler. He comes to a coal mining town in Kyushu where miners live under hard circumstances in the 1920s. Tsunetaro helps his female boss take back the rights of a mine by winning a big game.

Feb. 4: “Toile no Pieta (Pieta in the Toilet),” 2015 drama, 2 hours.

Directed by Daishi Matsunaga. Starring Yojiro Noda and Hana Sugisaki.

Hiroshi is an introverted painter once full of promise but has given up on his dreams and works part-time cleaning office windows. He suddenly falls ill and the doctor requires him to bring a family member for his test results. Not wanting to involve his family, Hiroshi pays a high school student Mai, who he meets in the waiting room, to play his sister. When he realizes he has only three months left in his life, he once again finds passion in drawing.

In 1922, a young woman named Taki arrives as a maid to work for the family who resides in a small western-style house. Over time, Taki quietly observes as a fleeting love affair develops between Shoji and Tokiko. Sixty years later, her version of events is finally revealed.
