“Oedo Jikencho Bimi de Soro,” premieres on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 8:30 p.m.

During the late Edo period when the Tenpo Reforms are in force, public discontent is growing over the collusive relationships between merchants and government officials. Shinpeita Kakie is a samurai who possesses a highly sensitive palate and remarkable knowledge of food. He publishes a tabloid-style newspaper that covers local happenings; however, Shinpeita is only interested in food and how to prepare it. As he searches Edo looking for food stories to report, he uses his sense of taste, knowledge and swordsmanship to help the Kitamachi magistrate Toyama to solve baffling cases that occur in the capital. Fresh out of jail, a smart-mouth wise guy Goro takes the name “Big Brother Katsumata.” Not fitting in well with established gangs, he forms a rag-tag gang called “the Shinjuku Brothers.” The members of their gang are thugs who only wish they were traditional yakuza. When they turn up at the funeral for a gangster, they are not welcomed, but a senior boss intervenes to keep things calm. The boss of bosses invites them to join a respected local council of warlords. Katsumata is suspicious of why such powerful men would extend an invitation to lowlife like himself.

Fourteen-year-old Kazuki lives with her mother. She feels unloved by her mother due the circumstances surrounding her birth. Because she harbors anxiety and perceives herself as being worthless to others, she gets into trouble. One day, a transfer student named Eri introduces her to 16-year-old Hiroshi, a reckless youth who’s a member of the “Nights” motorcycle gang. He works part-time for a living instead of going to school. Kazuki finds herself increasingly drawn to Hiroshi over time, but he soon becomes leader of the “Nights” and gets caught up in a conflict with a rival gang.

“Genji Kuro Sassoki Nuregami Nitoryu (Tales of Young Genji Kuro),” 1967 jidaigeki, 1 hour and 27 minutes.

Master swordsman Genji Kuro is entrusted by the Otsubo family to protect an antique sword known as the “kaen” sword. As part of a valuable pair of swords made by a legendary sword maker, the Otsubo family seeks to reunite it with its companion “suien” sword at Mishima
