On Thursday, Nov. 3, the curtain will go up on the 2016 Hawaii International Film Festival presented by Halekulani. For 11 glorious days, film lovers can be swept away to the 23 countries represented in HIFF 36. This year’s festival features some 177 films. Unless noted, all films will screen at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX.
After bringing the curtain down on the O‘ahu edition on Nov. 13, HIFF will travel to Hawai‘i island’s Palace Theater in Hilo and Kaua‘i’s Waimea Theater for four more days of screenings of selected films.
This year’s schedule of Japanese films includes approximately 30 Japanese or Japanese American-related films from a variety of genres, including anime, romance, suspense, documentaries, fabulous food and even erotica.
The Japanese films are always among the most popular every year at HIFF. As the Herald does each year, we once again sifted through the entire HIFF schedule and highlighted those films with Japanese-related stories and/or principals. They are presented here in chronological order by screening. The complete schedule of films, as well as ticket information, is available at hiff.org. See you in line!
