WHO/WHAT: A fundraiser to support the family of 5-year-old Soya Miyagi, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Soya, who was the son of Kohei and Miyuki Miyagi, loved eisa drumming. At the age of 2 he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer of the adrenal gland. Soya underwent high doses of chemotherapy, major surgeries to remove tumors, radiation therapy, a stem cell transplant and painful immunotherapy. After a period of remission, the cancer returned early this year.
This fundraiser will support the Miyagi Family and help them defray Soya’s medical expenses. All proceeds will be donated to the Miyagis. “SOS – Support Our Soya Fundraiser” will feature a White Elephant of new and gently used goods, a bake sale of homemade treats and a plant sale, including Okinawan Hibiscus plants. There will also be a special “Pop-Up Soya Shop” with T-shirts by Michelle Shiroma Designs and the “100% Half-Okinawan” Company, sock dolls by Loco Muttco and other handcrafted items.
WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the 100th Infantry Battalion Clubhouse, 520 Kamoku St. (across from Iolani School). Free parking will be available at Iolani School.
