The annual observance is held on the Sunday closest to Sept. 29, the day in 1943 when Sgt.
Shigeo “Joe” Takata of the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate) became the first Japanese American to be killed in combat in Europe. The joint memorial service involves the four World War II AJA military units: 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service and the 1399 Engineer Construction Battalion. The services are open to the public.

* 10th Annual Joint Memorial Service, hosted by the Nisei Veterans Legacy Center: Sunday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. The keynote speaker will be Rabbi Ken Aronowitz of Temple Emanu-El. Music by the 111th Army Band, Sounds of Aloha and Herb Ohta Jr.

* Maui Nisei Memorial Service: Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, 1 Go For Broke Place in Wailuku, near the intersection of Lower Main Street and Waiehu Beach Road.
