TÖKYÖ — In an effort to popularize Japanese culture, technology and diplomatic stances abroad, Japan’s Foreign Ministry is hoping to establish Japan House communication centers in London, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo, beginning in fiscal 2016.
Officials with the Foreign Ministry said the facilities will promote various aspects of Japanese culture through animation and comic corners, restaurants and shops selling regional specialties.
If the fiscal 2015 budget for the related expenses is approved, the ministry will open the facilities in the fiscal year starting March 2016, or later. It also envisions opening Japan House centers in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Istanbul.
The ministry hopes the centers, which will be set up in busy areas of these cities and headed by local figures, will help to increase support for Japan amid the country’s disputes with China and South Korea.
