Members and guests of the Japanese Women’s Society Foundation celebrated the new year with their annual shinnen enkai at the Natsunoya Teahouse on Jan. 25. Nearly 100 people attended the luncheon, which included “Lucky Me” bidding as well as home-made and baked goods and fukubukuro (surprise grab bag) sales.

Among the planned events for 2015 are the second annual Women’s Leadership Summit in Hawai‘i and Fashion Show, which will be held March 27 and 28 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. This year’s summit will focus on health, beauty and well-being, with a special presentation by Sulwhasoo Cosmetic representatives from Korea.

“East Meets West Fashion” will be the theme of the fashion show, which will feature fashions by ‘Iolani Sportswear and a group of Korean designers.

The shinnen enkai’s featured speaker was Kaoru Nakamura-Sensei, who spoke on haiku poetry. Audience members were invited to write their own haiku, with prizes given to the winners.

The entertainment included Okinawan dances by Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai; a Tai Chi sword demonstration by Master James Huang and a dance by Carrie Wakai and Huang; a Korean blessing song by the Bluewater Mission Singers and karaoke tunes by Mabel Yonemori.
