The 2014 Taiga drama, “Strategist Kanbe,” is about the life story of Yoshitaka Kuroda, otherwise known as Kanbei Kuroda, who was the chief strategist for Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Yoshitaka was born on Dec. 22, 1546, and was a daimyo (lord) during the late Sengoku through early Edo periods. (The Sengoku period is often referred to as the warring period and was a time of great social, political and military upheaval.) Kanbe was a brilliant military strategist and faithful to Toyotomi.

Otome-san is a term for mother-in-law. Asako Mizusawa lived with constant nagging and criticism from her mother-in-law until the older woman’s death two years ago. Just when Asako can begin to relax and enjoy being the mistress of the house, her only son informs her he plans to marry a girl named Ririka.
“853,” Monday at 9 p.m.
853 refers to the precinct where Detective Shinnosuke Kamo used to work. But this was before he accidentally shot a criminal in his custody. After that incident, Detective Kamo is reassigned to a smaller, rural jurisdiction. For 10 years, he keeps his nose to the grind, continuing to do great investigative work despite the demotion to a smaller police precinct. Until one day, he is called back to put his detective skills to work again in the 853.
“Mission to Kill (Hissatsu Shigotonin),” Tuesday at 9 p.m.
Shigotonin refers to a team of hired assassins. In this samurai drama consisting of multiple series and specials, police are left to unravel crimes committed by hired assassins. What becomes obvious is that the real criminals are not just the assassins, but the people who hired them.

The lab forms the main stage for this drama, which follows a female lab agent as she goes about her work. Mariko Sakaki, the main character, practices forensic medicine at the crime laboratory of the Kyoto Prefecture Police Department.
