WHO/WHAT: Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai Frances Nakachi Ryubu Dojo presents this special performance, “Tukeeya Hizamitin – Transcending Hearts,” featuring students from Tamagusuku Senju Kai Okinawa and Hawai‘i who have received certificates in Okinawa for various levels of proficiency in Ryukyu buyo – traditional Okinawan dance.
The event celebrates and congratulates the accomplishments and dedication of the certified performing artists.
The different types of certificates are: Shinjin-sho (newcomer’s award), Yuushuu-sho (award of excellence) and Saikoo-sho (highest award). In addition to earning certificates, a performing artist may also earn menkyo-jo (a license to teach). They are Kyoushi-menkyou (licensed advanced instructor) and Shihan-menkyou (licensed master instructor). The top tier is called Iemoto (grand master).
For this production, there will be performances by Iemoto Yoshiko Tanita and Iemoto Mieko Kinjo, as well as Hawai‘i members of Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai — Frances Nakachi, Shihan/Artistic Director; Mina Tamashiro, Saikoo-sho; Sandy Hayashi and Anna Tsuhako Lewis, Yuushuu-sho; and Melissa Uyeunten and Eric Kobayashi, Shinjin-sho.
Performers from Okinawa include Kaishu (directors) Masako Nakashima and Miyoshi Higa; and Shihan Ritsuko Ashimine.
WHEN/WHERE: Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at Mamiya Theatre.
COST: $30 for general seating. For an additional $20, you can attend an aftershow party featuring Awamori, Shochu, Soju and wine tasting.
