Dear Editor:

I wish to commend and congratulate The Hawai‘i Herald for offering to its readers the address given by Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr. on June 22, 2014, at the 72nd anniversary of the formation of the 100th Infantry Battalion.

It was a sensitive, perceptive and inspiring account of the exceptional bravery and sacrifice of the Japanese Americans who served in the Battalion, along with those who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service, the 522nd (Field Artillery Battalion), 232nd (Combat Engineer Company), the 1399th (Engineer Construction Battalion) and the Women’s Army Corps (WACS).

I was impressed by Adm. Harris’ use of historical figures and contemporary events that gave his address a special richness and relevance.

Wallace Fukunaga, Makiki
