Thanks to our parent company Shizuoka Shimbun, Hawaii Hochi, Ltd., which publishes The Hawaii Herald and Hawaii Hochi, has acquired a new press, the TKS JETLEADER 1500. This new digital press allows us to print color on every page. The Herald’s March 7 edition, out in stores this week, is the first job printed on the new “Jet.”
Also in this issue is the story of Sue Isonaga, an unsung hero of World War II. She passed away earlier this year at the age of 92.
This issue also contains the biographies of the 62nd Cherry Blossom Festival queen contestants and a chance to “Name the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen.” Prizes include a trip for 2 to Vegas, and a gift certificate and gift baskets from Big Island Candies.
For those of you familiar with Rev. Paul Osumi’s “Today’s Thought,” and wished it would be published again, wish no more. The favorite column will appear in every issue of the Herald on the comics page. A new book about Rev. Osumi was published by his son Norman called, “Today’s Thoughts — Rev. Paul Osumi: the Man and His Message.”
Lastly, recovery efforts are still continuing for Tohoku residents and surrounding areas following the devastating tsunami and earthquake that took place three years ago. Read how some women in the Ishinomaki area have found hope and purpose with the Nozomi Project.
The Feb. 21 issue featured Maui’s own, Jesse “Takamiyama” Kuhaulua, who is celebrating 50 years of sumo. For those of you who haven’t picked up a copy, you can still find it at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Marukai and at our Hawaii Hochi offices.
