Happy 2013 ~ the Year of the Snake
According to Chinese folklore, here are a few strengths and weaknesses of Snake People:

    Strengths

Snakes are skilled at communicating but say little. They possess gracious morality and great wisdom. Snake People are usually financially secure and have tremendous sympathy for others. They are determined to accomplished their goals and hate to fail. Although they look calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate.

    Weaknesses

Snake People are likely to be jealous and suspicious. They should be cautious about what they discuss with others, as it might cause them to lose friendships and opportunities. Snakes tend to overdo things and prefer to rely on themselves than others. They are courteous and polite, but are headstrong.

The cover features artwork by one of many Japanese language students who participated in the annual nengajoo (New Year’s card) contest sponsored by the Hawaii Association of Teachers of Japanese (HATJ). The winning cards of other students are featured on pages 9 and 10.

Also, meet Darrell Kaninau, who although not Japanese, has embraced his family’s annual tradition of mochitsuki.
